Networking and the theory of the 6 degrees of separation

This week class was focused on the importance of (i) Networking and (ii) Reaching out to those who can help. I mean, there it is of no value in having a network that you don't use because you are simply afraid of talking to people or that they would judge you.

A little bit more insight on the theory of the six degrees of separation: "Six degrees of separation (also referred to as the "Human Web") refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth. It was popularized by a play written by John Guare." (Thank you wikipedia for this information).

The way I interepret this is Networking is easy because if anyone in the world is conected by a max of 6 other people, than as Porugal is smaller, and everyone knows everyone, it will be much easier to find someone and contact him so that he can help me in job searching.

I have done that already and scheduled a couple of conversations with friends from the PE and Banking industry so that they could tell me a little bit more about their job, their day to day life and their business.

I hope I can get insiht out of them and see if that is appropriate for me. In the limit, if I am not abe to find anything appealing I'll start spending more money in EuroMilhões ;-)

And what next?

I can say that my key take ways for the week, regarding career search/change can be resumed in two quotes by the late Jim Rohn (one of America's foremos Business Philosopher which unfortunately past way last December):
- "Don't bring your need to the marketplace, bring your skill. If you don't feel well, tell your doctor, but not the marketplace. If you need money, go to the bank, but not the marketplace."
- " We get paid for bringing value to the marketplace. It takes time to bring value to the market place,but we get paid for the value, not the time".

Moving forward, it is getting clearer that I need to accelerate my decision making process regarding the industries I would like to work. For the time being I just know that it will be in Portugal and most definitely in the financial area... let's work/think on it, and see...

No time to sleep

This is the definition of Sleep according to Wikipedia: "Naturally recurring state of relatively suspended sensory and motor activity, characterized by total or partial unconsciousness and the inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles. It is distinguished from quiet wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, and it is more easily reversible than hibernation or coma. It is observed in all mammals, all birds, and many reptiles, amphibians and fish. In humans, other mammals, and a substantial majority of other animals that have been studied (such as some species of fish, birds, ants, and fruit flies), regular sleep is essential for survival".

As such, I would like to officially start my blog, saying that my brain, and remaining body parts wont have that much time to sleep during the next year, as I have just started the LisbonMBA, and boy, work just keeps coming....

This blog will have to objectives, the first one to let you one what have been the weekly insights I had with the MBA, and the second one, which is to share the most recent developments in what regards my job hunting process.
